Headphone Review: Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7B



This pair of headphones does an impressive job cancelling out the noise so you can focus on the music.
Being a geek, the concept of an active noise-cancelling headphone has always intrigued me — after all, what could be cooler than a headphone which samples external sounds, then in a split second produces a destructive sound wave that effectively cancels out the external noise.
So you can imagine that when the Audio-Technica QuietPoint active noise-cancelling headphones came in, I was pretty interested to try them out.
Beyond just the coolness of the technology, active noise-cancelling headphones are actually quite practical if you’re a frequent traveller — the technology works especially well to cancel out the constant loud drone of aircraft engines.
The thing is that active noise-cancelling has a pitfall — often,the music you’re listening to has a slightly muffled effect, as if it’s being heard from behind a door.
This was the case with a few active noise-cancelling headphones I have tried — while the noise cancelling on those headphones were excellent, my music had a little less clarity than it should have.
So does the Audio-Technica QuietPoint have the same drawback? I had the perfect opportunity to test the headphones on a recent intercontinental trip.
Frequent traveller pack
The Audio-Technica QuietPoint headphones are actually very similar to the more famous Bose QuietComfort active noise-cancelling headphones — not only are the names similar, but the packaged accessories are also pretty much the same.
Much like the Bose, the Audio-Technica comes in a nice zip-up semi-rigid case with a full complement of accessories for the frequent traveller.
Apart from the headphones, there’s both a short and long audio cable, a full-sized stereo jack adapter and even a twin-pronged audio adapter for plugging into airplane audio ports.
The QuietPoint runs on batteries, or rather a single AA-sized battery, although it’s used mostly for the active noise-cancelling.
The battery compartment is accessed in a rather nifty fashion — you basically rotate the outer side of one of the earpieces counter-clockwise to reveal the battery compartment inside.
Once installed, just flip the little sliding switch on the left earpiece and you’re ready to go.
TOO LARGE: The headband on the QuietPoint has limited
adjustment and sticks out quite far on the sides.
The comfort is pretty good — the earcups are made of a soft leatherette material which completely encloses your ears.
However I did find that the headphones were a little limited in adjustment — my head is pretty small and even so I had to extend the headband all the way out.
The design is also such that it makes the headband jut out sideways a little more than other headphones.
Audio quality
So how was the audio quality? It was surprisingly good to be honest.
With the active noise-cancelling on, music was still clear and the midrange was forward enough that it didn’t sound like it was coming from behind a door.
A colleague commented that the bass levels could be better, but since I lean more towards understated, natural bass, I was fine with it.
In fact, it’s fair to say that I really liked the sound quality of the Audio-Technica.
Incidentally, the headphones actually still work even when the noise cancellation function is turned off, but I don’t recommend that you listen to it like this — for some reason, audio quality sounds a bit tinny when the noise cancelling is not turned on.
On my twenty-hour intercontinental flight, I used the QuietPoint for about ten or twelve hours straight — sometimes listening to music and at other times, just as a way to cancel out the constant (and as it turns out, very loud) hum of the aircraft engines.
Amazingly the headphone batteries lasted the entire trip and even a couple of weeks later, the battery still hasn’t run out in spite of (admittedly sporadic) use since the trip.
As far as the noise cancellation goes, Audio-Technica claims that the headphones can cut out about 85% of ambient noise and
I have no reason to doubt this claim — the headphones successfully cut down the loud drone of the engines to a barely audible hum.
The main advantage of active noise cancellation over passive methods like earplug-style earphones is that you won’t also hear yourself — if you’ve ever tried those in-ear earphones, you’ll understand what I mean.
Conclusion
So yes, the Audio-Technica QuietPoint headphones are pretty good — apart from the solid noise cancellation, the semi-hard case and extensive bundled accessories extend the value of the headphones quite a bit.
One thing I haven’t mentioned is the price —at RM959 it’s not cheap by any means, but it is a lot cheaper than the comparable Bose QuietComfort headphones which will run you quite a few hundred ringgit over RM1,000.
In a nutshell, if you’re a frequent traveller looking for a set of decent active noice-cancelling headphones, you won’t go far wrong with the Audio-Technica QuietPoint.
Pros: Effective noise cancelling; good audio quality; lots of bundled accessories; good battery life.
Cons: Limited headband adjustment.

Graphic Card Review: ATI Radeon 5570


For an entry-level video card, the ATI Radeon 5570 defies expectations by letting you enjoy most current games at a good level of visual quality.
Any PC gamer would be familiar with the dilemma of setting up a decent gaming rig. On one hand, you’d want some serious hardware to run your games.
On the other hand, you’d want enough left in your budget to actually purchase original games.
Fortunately for the gamer on a budget, AMD offers an excellent entry-level video card for about RM300 — the ATI Radeon 5570.
Although nowhere as pricey or bulky as the higher-end video cards, the Radeon 5570 lets users enjoy their games and videos at a surprisingly good level of graphics.
Let the games begin
Before we get to anything else, let’s cut to the chase: What kind of games and what quality of visuals can a gamer expect from an ATI Radeon 5570?
We tested the video card on a 32-bit Vista PC running a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Quad processor with 4GB RAM.
We picked a selection of four games, and each was set to play at 1,600 x 1,200-pixel resolution at “high” setting.
The two real-time strategy games we chose, Supreme Commander 2 andDawn of War 2, looked great. We commanded our massive armies and enjoyed the spectacular particle effects and explosions that occurred throughout the battlefields without noticing any significant lag or choppiness.
SupCom2 and DoW2 had an average framerate of around 30fps to 40fps, which is reasonable enough to enjoy these games.
Wait, no — 30fps to 40fps at 1,600 x 1,200-pixel resolution and at high graphics settings is actually pretty good for a relatively cheap graphics card.
We were expecting that these games would only run that well on much lower resolutions like 1,280 x 1,024-pixels.
For those not keeping score, the rule of thumb is that any game that runs at less than 30fps will be pretty choppy or outright unplayable.
Anything above 30 provides a decent gaming experience, although any hardcore gamer will demand 60 frames hitting their eyeballs every second.
Similarly, the two first-person shooter games we selected, Bioshock 2and Fallout 3, performed pretty well in our tests.
Bioshock 2 had an average frame rate of around 30fps to 40fps, which was quite surprising considering our best efforts to abuse the game’s water-rendering effects.
The Radeon 5570 performed a little better on Fallout 3, with an average of around 40fps to 50fps.
It did dip to 30fps at one point in our travels across the wasteland — notably this was when we were traversing one particularly scenic route on the overland map.
Other than that, the video card rendered the scenery efficiently and beautifully, although Fallout players will understand that this is “beautiful” in the context of a radiation-blasted post-apocalyptic landscape.
The performance of the Radeon 5570 in the gaming department was significantly above our expectations, so long story short this video card will let you play current PC games in style without breaking your wallet.
Technicalities
For the power it dishes out, the Radeon 5570’s pretty compact (it takes up the space of only one PCI-e slot, cooling fan and all) and consumes little power. AMD advertises that the card eats less than 45-watts when fully utilised, although we didn’t personally measure this.
(We did ask our interns to poke their fingers into an active card to see if “it felt like 45-watts.”)
We can, however, vouch for the fact that the runs relatively quietly. It’s not ninja-silent, but you’ll have no issues with the little noise it makes if you plan to use your PC as a media centre.
Why yes, a media centre — it’s certainly a viable idea with the ATI Radeon 5570. The video card has three video outputs — a DVI port, an HDMI (with audio) port and, if you’re feeling old-fashioned, a VGA port.
The HDMI port and the card’s dual-stream 1080p playback support means that you can plug your PC into a HDTV, pop in a Blu-Ray disc, kick back and enjoy a movie in HD.
Feature-packed
The ATI Radeon 5570 comes with a few extra features, although to be honest we’re not entirely excited about them.
We feel that these features are more suited for a high-end video card with the power to make full use of them. It’s like mounting a rear spoiler onto a Proton Saga; it doesn’t exactly make it a race car.
First, the ATI Radeon 5000 series supports Microsoft’s latest DirectX 11 technology. DX 11 promises significantly improved graphics processing and visual rendering, but if you’re the sort of person who really cares about the best quality of graphics possible then you’re probably better off purchasing something higher in the Radeon line.
Besides, the few games of note that actually support DirectX 11 include the upcoming Crysis 2. And if you really believe that you’ll be able run the latest game on a budget gaming machine then, sir, we have a bridge that we wish to sell to you.
Second, if you’re a fan of plugging every opening available to you — we know we are —you can utilise all three of the card’s video outputs using ATI’s Eyefinity technology.
This is great if you have productivity in mind; sharing a single display across three monitors, side by side, gives you a significant amount of desktop space.
However, if you’re planning to play a game that runs at, say, a 5,760 x 1,200-pixel resolution across three monitors, then we hope the game you have in mind isn’t too intensive for this entry-level video card. Say, perhaps, Pacman?
(Actually, come to think of it, if you’re buying graphics cards on a budget, where’d you get the cash to purchase two extra monitors?)
Conclusion
If you really can’t be bothered making sense of the technical details, framerate comparisons and such, then the bottomline is this: The ATI Radeon 5570 is a great video card for its price.
It lets you enjoy most of the currently available PC games at a very, very reasonable quality, and it also has the capability to serve in a decent home theatre PC/media centre.
Now, go get the Radeon 5570 to finish building your gaming rig and use the savings to enjoy even more original games.

Cons: Nothing much.

HD Media Player Review: Seagate Freeagent Theater + HD


Seagate’s full HD multimedia player completes your home theatre setup, enabling you to access your digital library from the comfort of your sofa.
In this day and age, your home theatre system will not really be complete if a portable high-definition (HD) media player, such as Seagate’s FreeAgent Theater+ HD, is not part of the setup.
With such a device, your whole media library — movies, TV series, personal photos and videos, as well as downloadable content — are now just a few clicks of a button away.
Plus, since the media player comes bundled with a remote control, you don’t have to leave the comfort of the sofa when changing to a different movie or TV series.
The device is also nicely designed, with a glossy black housing, which would not look out of place when placed anywhere on your home theatre rack.
Out-of-the box ready


The FreeAgent Theater+ HD boasts full HD (1080p) playback with Dolby Digital and DTS 2.0 + Digital Out surround sound.
It supports almost all conceivable media formats, including MPEG4, DivX HD, Xvid HD, AVI and MOV videos; AAC, MP3, WMA, WAV and OGG audio files; and as for images, the media player supports JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG and TIFF types, among others.
Users can connect it to their HDTV via the composite, component video or HDMI port. However, only composite and component cables are bundled in the package.
Seagate has also included its proprietary Media Sync software to enable users to automatically synchronise their media files stored in the computer with the external USB storage device.
The media player is out-of-the-box ready — meaning, you simply take it out of the box, plug in the power adaptor, connect the AV cable to the HDTV and fire away.
However the FreeAgent Theater+ HD doesn’t come with any built-in storage.
It has two USB2.0 ports which users can use to connect their portable hard disks or thumbdrives. The ports also supports compatible digital cameras and the optional WiFi adaptor to stream data wirelessly.
LOT OF OPTIONS: The device offers myriad of connectivity
options to enable users experience Full HD viewing to the fullest.
Also available is a special dock in front to connect the company’s FreeAgent Go portable hard disk. You just need to remove the dock cover, slide the Go portable hard disk in and the player will immediately recognise it.
As the device also has an Ethernet port, you can use that to connect to your home network, providing access to more media files stored on your PC or notebook.
That’s not all, the media player is also pre-installed with four widgets to access Picasa, Flickr, Weather and Finance Channels.
In operation
A word of warning: don’t lose the remote control as it is the only way to control the FreeAgent Theater+ HD.
Fire it up and users will be presented with a simple user interface that is divided into five sections namely, Movies, Pictures, Music, Internet and Devices.
The UI layout is nothing to shout about but suffice to say navigating through it was pretty smooth.
We noticed that the device was fast to load videos and pictures, and had no problem whatsoever in playing all the supported media files, including 1080p movies, that we threw at it.
There was a suggestion to test the device with a 40GB uncompressed Blu-ray file but we didn’t have one on hand.
In our opinion, however, it would probably be better if you simply watch the movie directly from the genuine Blu-ray disc that you own instead of archiving such a huge file on a portable hard disk.
We also didn’t encounter much problems when trying to connect the player to our home network.
As a matter of fact, all it took was to enable the sharing media file option on the laptop and the device immediately was able to access and stream those shared files even if your computer is connected to the network over WiFi.
With the Internet connection also available, we were able to download the latest firmware update.
Once installed, we got to see an enhanced user interface as well as new widgets to access YouTube videos and video feeds from ESPN, CNN and others.
Now you can also subscribe to RSS news feeds from your favourite websites on the device.
SLOT IN: The device ships with a special dock to
connect the FreeAgent Go portable hard disk.
Solid package
There are many similar offerings in the market but the FreeAgent Theater+ HD certainly edges over the competition thanks to its trendy design, silent operation and the ability to play almost all of today’s popular multimedia file formats.
We also like the fact that it connects to the home network and Internet without a fuss.
Heck, even its total ease-of-use and the ability to plug in up to three portable hard disks alone are worth the price of admission.
In short, there’s scarcely anything not to like about this device.
Pros: Nice design; ease to use; fuss-free connectivity; supports up to three storage devices.
Cons: Nothing major.

Projector Review: 3M MPRO150


So-called pico projectors have been out a while now and today we take a look at a notable little addition to the market: the MPro150 from 3M.
AS FAR as standalone pico projectors are concerned, the MPro150 pocket projector is actually better tricked-out than most — instead of just working as a simple projector that connects to your PC or handheld, this 3M product supports a number of Microsoft Office file formats as well as video and audio formats right out of the box, thus negating the need to actually connect to a PC in some situations.
The bundle of accessories that come with the MPro150 is generous to say the least — you get the device itself, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, an AC adapter, a composite audio-video cable, a VGA adapter for notebook PCs, a soft carry bag and even a tiny tripod that fits on to the bottom of the device.
As part of the review package, we even had the optional iPod touch/iPhone adapter with a HDMI cable which allows you to output video from the iPhone/iPod Touch to the projector.
That’s quite a generous bundle of accessories, and right out of the box, you’re ready to connect to the most common devices on the market.
Project!
The MPro150’s printed instruction manual is pretty sparse when it comes to instructions, so it’s pretty fortunate that the device itself is quite easy to figure out — there’s a power switch, a “back” button and a directional pad. On the front, right next to the lens, is the focus wheel.
CLEAR ICONS: The grid of 3 x 3 icons in the MPro150
pocket projector are quite self-explanatory.
There is no keystone correction so if you don’t want distorted images, you need to make sure that the projector is square to the wall you’re projecting on. Turn on the device and you’re presented with the home screen which has a grid of icons which are pretty self-explantory — there are icons such as movie, presentation, favourites, etc.
Clicking on any of these icons brings up a list of files stored in the internal memory or in a MicroSD card, and choosing one opens the file.
The file format support is quite extensive — common video, audio andOffice file formats are supported.
Audio output is only so-so — it’s just loud enough for a small group of people to hear in a quiet room, but I would have preferred if it could go a wee bit louder.
Connecting the VGA cable or iPhone cable to the MPro150 automatically switches the device to external input mode — this worked flawlessly with notebooks and the like, but I occasionally had situations with the iPhone where the video wouldn’t properly output to the projector until I disconnected the cable and reconnected it again.
Battery life is actually surprisingly good. The MPro150 is rated to last two hours using the built-in lithium-ion battery and in practice, we managed to get about two and a quarter hours from it.
This is pretty darned impressive considering that I was playing the video at the highest volume and with the brightness at maximum (there are only two brightness settings, by the way).
COMPACT: The MPro150 fits in your pocket, yet produces
an image that's as large as some HDTVs.
Talking about brightness, I tried the MPro150 in a variety of lighting conditions and found that in a bright room it was already difficult to see once the video size got larger than 15in or 20in or so.
However with the lights off, I could easily hit the 30in-50in size and still have an image that is bright enough to see.
Conclusion
The MPro150 is a cool little projector — even if you don’t use it too often, it’s useful when you do need it.
This little item goes a bit further than most pico projectors in that it has built-in video, audio and Office file format playback.
While the asking price is actually quite reasonable for a projector, I recommend trying it out before you buy just to see if the brightness levels are suitable for the environments you intend to use it in.
More so than regular projectors, tiny projectors like this are best used in very dimly lit rooms or in total darkness.
Pros: Very portable; built-in support for multiple file formats.
Cons: Audio could be louder; can only be used in very dimly-lit rooms.

Keyboard Review: Microsoft Arc Keyboard


Microsoft’s Arc Keyboard earns points for style but loses some in terms of usability.
THERE is a very fine line between having something designed to look really good and something that is unusable because of it.
Well, let me present to you exhibit A — the Microsoft Arc keyboard, the company’s attempt at keeping a delicate balance between usability and a product that looks good.
Like the Arc Mouse, the Arc Keyboard is all about design in a compact form factor — say what you will about it, you certainly can’t deny that the Arc Keyboard is one hot little number.
The question is, is it a matter of form of function? Read on to find out.
Tiny package
In the box, there’s very little that comes with the Arc Keyboard — you get a driver disc, two AAA-size batteries, the keyboard itself and attached magnetically on the back, a nano transceiver.
The keyboard itself is very light and compact as it’s certainly one of the lightest keybaords I’ve ever tested.
Design-wise, it’s very nice — true to its name, the Arc keyboard has a gentle vertical arc with an apex somewhere near the middle of the keyboard.
The keyboard isn’t rectangular either as it tapers on either end while the keys themselves are arranged in an arc.
The overall effect of all this is a very eye-catching design and I really like the look that Microsoft has achieved with this keyboard.
However, some concessions have been made to make the keyboard as compact as possible — for one thing, there’s no number pad, so if you use the number pad a lot, this isn’t the keyboard for you.
UNIQUE: The directional pad on the Microsoft Arc Keyboard is great for your HTPC, but is unusable for gaming. The tiny USB transceiver is also shown here.
For another, the Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down buttons have been arranged in the same top row as six F-keys — yes only six F-keys as the F7 to F12 are accessed using the same keys but with the FN key as a modifier.
Finally, and perhaps most significantly, the arrow keys have been replaced with a four-way directional rocker switch.
In use
Having spent a few days working with the Microsoft Arc Keyboard (including typing out this review) I have to say that this keyboard isn’t for everyone.
For example, if you use your PC every day for gaming or even word processing, the Arc Keyboard isn’t for you. The shallow key travel, lack of number pad and proper arrow keys makes gaming and extended word processing uncomfortable at best.
The problem is also that as you move out towards the keys at the corners, they tend to be squashed closer which means that if you’re a touch typist, you might very well miss the keys on the outer edge of the keyboard.
However, as a small, easily portable keyboard that works better than the built in keyboard on your netbook, the Arc Keyboard passes with flying colours — the keys are certainly more comfortable to type on and better spaced than on any of the current 10in netbooks I’ve tried.
There is also one computing scenario that the Microsoft Arc Keyboard would be great in — as a wireless keyboard for your HTPC (home theatre PC).
In this case, the Arc’s design really comes into its own — it’s light and fits on the lap, the 2.4GHz wireless technology works very well even when transceiver is placed down and out of the way and the directional pad ­actually works well for navigating in Windows Media Center.
Conclusion
So is the Microsoft Arc Keyboard a case of form over function? Well, yes and no, depending on what you intend to use it for.
If you’re looking for a cool-looking wireless keyboard for the desktop PC you use every day, then I’m afraid the Arc Keyboard just won’t do.
However, as a keyboard designed for light use, such as in your HTPC or as a better keyboard for your netbook, then it’s actually pretty good.
Pros: Attractive design; lightweight; good wireless reception.
Cons: Missing number pad; directional pad is not for everyone; shallow key travel.

GPS Navigator: Garmin Nuvi 765 Review


The Nuvi 765 adds 3D buildings, lane assist and Bluetooth on top of the standard feature set of Garmin car navigation units.
WHILE most smartphones today come with built-in GPS, there’s really ­nothing like a purpose-built device for car navigation.
In practical terms, having a GPS in your smartphone is actually quite useful for a number of reasons — such as when you’re walking around looking for a restaurant or even using one of those funky augmented reality applications to find out more about your surroundings.
However, when it comes to in-car navigation you really don’t want to receive a phone call while you’re using the smartphone’s GPS.
Not only is it a tad dangerous, but it would actually interfere with the turn-by-turn voice navigation on the device when you’re answering a call, not to mention possibly taking you out of the navigation interface to receive the call.
So the best solution if you need a GPS is to get a car navigation unit like the Garmin Nuvi 765, which is not only purpose built but has several other niceties that no current smartphone has.
Build
The Nuvi 765 is actually one of the higher-end models in the Garmin Nuvi line and offers a Bluetooth handsfree connection to your mobile phone, junction view with lane assist and 3D buildings on the map.
These features aren’t new if you look at the other brands on the market, but it is new on a Garmin, which until this model, only supported junction view.
As far as handling goes, the Nuvi 765 is much the same as its other siblings — about the same size and shape (but heavier) and now comes with a non-slip coating on the back so it’s more secure when you’re holding it in your hand.
You also get a generous 4.3in LCD screen which is bright and easy to read even in bright light.
The biggest change is that the Nuvi 765 comes with an all new connector at the bottom and a new suction cup windshield mount, which means accessories meant for the lower-end models probably won’t work with the Nuvi 765.

The Nuvi 765 comes with its own car charger which again, is not based on the mini USB standard — instead, it has its own proprietary connector which connects directly to the windshield mount.
There is no wall socket charger, but that’s not such a big deal, since you can charge the device by connecting up the Nuvi to your PC using a standard mini USB cable.
Yes, the Nuvi 765 still retains the mini USB connector, which sits right at the bottom of the device, right next to the proprietary connector — I tested it and you can indeed still charge from this connector if you wish.
Other notable features are the SD card slot on the side, a 3.5mm stereo minijack port and an external aerial port on the back.
The 3.5mm stereo minijack port is a hint of one of the new software features present in the Nuvi 765 — yes, it comes with a music player which supports MP3 files and Audible.com audio book files.
There is however, no video file support, so music is all that you’re going to get on this device.
Photo viewing is also carried over from the previous Nuvi devices and allows you to store JPEG photos on the device or in an SD card and view them on the Nuvi 765.
Last but not least, the Nuvi 765 comes with Bluetooth A2DP support, which means the GPS can also act as a speakerphone for your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone.
Performance
As far as navigation goes, there are no surprises here — like all Nuvis, the interface is familiar, uncluttered and it works.
I quite like the Garmin interface as the icons are large and easy-to-understand and there’s no confusion when accessing the various features.
GPS lock was pretty quick at under a minute from cold start, and typically only a few seconds if you’ve turned it on recently.
There wasn’t any surprises for navigation either although in the time that I used it, there weren’t that many 3D buildings and junctions that I could see — some buildings, like the KLCC and major junctions were represented, but I find it still a little lacking compared with some other brands.
SHOW ME: The 3D buildings on the Nuvi 765 are pretty well
represented in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, although further
away from the city, fewer of these are found.
Nevertheless 3D buildings aren’t really important when it comes to actual navigation, though junction view and lane assist are.
I did manage to pair my phone with the Nuvi via Bluetooth, and as a speakerphone, the 765’s speakers were pretty loud and the microphone sensitive enough to pick up my voice even though my windscreen (and consequently, the Nuvi) is pretty far away from my head.
What didn’t work so well is the text-to-speech function which reads out road names. As usual, since our road names are not in English, the text-to-speech mangles most road names.
Conclusion
Overall, the Nuvi 765 works very well and the 3D buildings and junction view are always a welcome, but not essential, addition to the basic GPS car navigation feature set.
The Nuvi 765 is a bit on the expensive side and considering that you can get more features in other GPS units that are a few hundred cheaper, you might want to look around at some other brands if 3D buildings and Bluetooth connectivity are important to you.
In defence of the Nuvi 765, it’s important to note that in countries like the US, the unit has an extra feature — a traffic avoidance system which is based on publicly broadcasted information on the FM radio channel.
If this feature were possible in this country (it’s not because I don’t have an FM radio traffic broadcast system in place) it would make the Nuvi 765 a lot more attractive a buy, since having traffic information available on the map would make a big difference in the navigation experience.
As it is, all I’m getting is a more expensive Nuvi with features that aren’t really worth paying extra for, so you might also want to look at a few lower-end Garmin Nuvi models if you just need navigation.
